Making Tax Digital for landlords
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax changes how many landlords report to HMRC: digital records and quarterly updates instead of a single annual return. This is general information - check HMRC guidance and speak to your accountant.
Who is affected
Individual landlords and sole traders whose combined property and self-employment income is above the threshold. HMRC has set it to start at £50,000 from April 2026, then £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
What changes
- Keep income and expense records digitally
- Send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software
- Submit a final declaration after the tax year ends
